There’s a new kid on the block! Having opened just a few months ago, About: Spicer has been causing waves in the leafy suburb of Woollahra. This café/tapas bar has been keeping the neighbours awake with their cogent coffees and eclectic cocktails.
Café by day, tapas by night, I chose the latter. And I’m glad I did. About: Spicer’s tapas menu is extensive and creative; where they translate ingredients used for the breakfast/lunch menu into interesting tapas offerings. To begin, I ordered a ginger iced tea, which was incredibly refreshing and strong with ginger flavour, which I loved.
Following this, I ordered the ‘Toasted Turkish Bread with Humus & Cashew Basil Dip’. The bread was fresh and crusty with a glorious drizzle of balsamic glaze. I mopped up the cashew basil dip – it was so good.
Trying not to stuff myself with bread, I resisted in finishing the rest.
What came out next was nothing short of delicious – a ‘Roast Pumpkin Salad’, jam-packed with sweet roasted cubes of pumpkin sitting atop a fresh bed of spinach and grilled haloumi. The generous serving ensured cubes of pumpkin and haloumi in every mouthful. The size and tastiness of the salad was a precursor to what was coming.
Next, I indulged in the house special of ‘Finger Lickin Chicken Wings’. To be honest, I was expecting your typical wings, battered and deep-fried with a side spoon of sweet chilli sauce but what came out had me gushing, ‘Holy Crap!’ What was on the plate were not your sub-par fried wings but lollypops. The talented chef has turned the wings into neat little chicken pops. These pops were then deep-fried and glazed with a subtly spicy sweet chilli sauce – perfection.
Carrying on I asked for the ‘Chilli Prawn Risotto’, which was studded with beautiful fleshy prawns and blanketed in a thick covering of Parmesan cheese – the result; a cheesy hot mess that was so moreish.
The night drew on so too the music, testifying to their loudness and presence in the sleepy suburb of Woollahra, their signature ‘Bloody Mary’ is something rambunctious; vodka, tomato juice and get this… 3 mini sliders sitting aloofly on top. WTF?! The sliders, which included a Wagyu beef, grilled chicken and haloumi complimented the cocktail so well. I can see this becoming their thing.
Already having to unbutton the top button of my jeans, I activated my second stomach in wanting of dessert. I went for the ‘Nutella Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich’. Again, the surprises… between the two house-made Nutella cookies was a thick slab of banana cheesecake ice cream. This. Was. Amazing. What a roaring conclusion to a frolicsome night.
