When you take a seat at the table for your Death Row Dinner (you know, the one where you can go all out with your favourite food before they march you down the line to ‘the chair’), what food would you want to see plated up in front of you?
For this foodie trapped inside a lawyer’s 9-5, you just can’t go past the classics:
Steak. Medium-rare. Mustard. Potatoes. Red wine.
Enter “The Cut”, who were able to heighten what I thought I’d envisaged to be an almost flawless food fantasy experience with an additional layer of decadence: they ceremonially present you with a selection of steak knives, from which you are invited to select your chosen blade. This conjured up imagery of a knight and squire discussing their sword of choice before riding into battle. Only in this instance, the only scars I was likely to be carrying home with me came in the form of a sated, satisfied stomach carrying some of the best steak I’ve ever eaten in my life.
Executive Chef Timothy Martin has done a great job curating a menu favouring only the very best locally sourced prime Australian beef and sustainable seafood which will have any meat lover salivating.
All of the cuts I tried at “The Cut” were excellent and flavoursome, but the Robbins Island Dry Aged Rump was a stand out for me, because it very nearly melted in my mouth without having to chew it. These guys get “it”. Great produce, handled with care and respect, presented to their diners to enjoy in a graceful form that isn’t over-the-top.
The decor of the restaurant is also worth a mention, because it does put diners in the mood to enjoy a decadent meal. Dark colours, sleek lines, a beautiful bar. It’s not hard to imagine yourself out to a high end meal in the early part of the 20th Century. The service adds to the charm, with all of the staff being helpful and attentive (this includes using the torch on their own iPhone to ensure the photos I took of their meals were well lit!), but happy to let diners relax and enjoy their food.
All in all, great food, great vibe and great service. As far as pre-execution meals go, this one is right up there. Go see for yourself!
